About the Talk

Pune has a history of 200 years of British cantonments at Khadki, Poona (Garpir), Dehu road & Wanawadi. With the advent of Christianity as a new religious faith in late 18th & early 19th century Pune, it witnessed the new social need for worshiping places for Europeans, native Christians and the converted communities of the Military regiments who were camping on the outskirts of the historic core city. This phase initially saw the wealthy Bombay merchants assisting the Christian priests and their Missionary churches by hiring their private properties and villas for their accommodation and worshiping purpose. Later it saw the basilican churches erected for European government officers in the Military camps of Cantonment areas. Most of these architectural icons landmarks still dotting the multiethnic social fabric of Pune core and cantonment area have fallen prey to the tests of time and changing needs of the worshipping communities. This talk will attempt a revisit to these architect
